ABSTRACT

Launched in 1977, the Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy is directed towards companies, governments, trade unions and employer organisations. The key strength of the International Labour Organisation Declaration is that it defines the obligations of governments as well as companies in promoting social and economic development. All governments should pursue policies designed to promote equality of opportunity and treatment in the employment, with a view to eliminating any discrimination based on race, colour, sex, religion, political opinion, national extraction or social origin. Governments should carefully study the impact of multinational enterprises on employment in different industrial sectors. Multinational enterprises, particularly when operating in developing countries, should endeavour to increase employment opportunities and standards, taking into account the employment policies and objectives of the governments, as well as security of employment and the long-term development of the enterprise.
