ABSTRACT

The Fair Labor Association (FLA) is a network of companies, human rights and labour organisations and colleges and universities seeking to improve working conditions. The FLA works with companies to improve internal monitoring systems. Companies are expected to implement systems to ensure that the FLA Code of Conduct is upheld throughout their supply chains. The FLA model combines both internal monitoring by the participating company in the USA, in addition to independent, external monitoring by groups accredited by the FLA. The FLA staff evaluates the company performance in fulfilling each of its obligations. The FLA staff also can use their discretion to perform independent verification through a visit to a factory to confirm that remediation efforts have been undertaken and have been effective. The FLA has accredited a range of organisations to conduct external monitoring against various components of its code.
