ABSTRACT

Packaging has probably received more attention in the environmental debate than any other manufactured product. This is because packaging is one of the most visible components of the waste-stream, making up around one-third of the average household's rubbish and over half of all items in the litter stream. Pressure is being applied to the packaging industry through the introduction of government regulations in Europe, the USA, Japan and other countries around the world. The Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste required industry either to accept all returned packaging or to provide for its collection and recycling. Transport packaging is less likely to be excessive, but opportunities exist to reduce waste and save money through a more careful assessment of packaging needs. Stretch wrap can be eliminated, by using a spray-on resin to secure unitised loads without the need for further packaging.
