ABSTRACT

The international guidelines and standards give companies a footing in the worldwide implementation of corporate social responsibility but, at the same time, they cause tension. In order to deal responsibly with the tension between international rules of conduct and local circumstances in concrete situations, many international companies are currently doing their best to draw up their own rules for their personnel. The chapter provides the company examples such as Shell’s human rights policy, Heineken’s integrity policy and Thermphos’s environmental policy. The Human Rights Compliance Assessment (HRCA) instrument consists of 1,000 indicators and more than 350 questions, based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the core conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and other human rights treaties and conventions. Environment is the single most important theme for Thermphos with regard to corporate social responsibility. Hence management decided to start streamlining the environmental policy.
