ABSTRACT

Effective moves toward responsible business have to be bold. A business’s primary motivations for responsible business can be divided into two types: profit motivation and non-profit motivation. A business motivated by profit maximization follows egoist ethical decisionmaking and will only engage in responsible business practices if there is no other activity or investment opportunity more profitable than making a commitment to responsible business activities. A profit-optimizing business will target maximum profit while at the same time paying attention to the parallel condition of acting responsibly. Development strategies for becoming a responsible business being responsible can be pursued in two drastically different underlying business strategies, permeating any subsequent business decision. Maintenance strategies for responsible business are slowly becoming a visible phenomenon. The company desires to become a truly virtuous responsible business, transforming its basic processes and culture toward more sustainable ways.
