ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the development and growth of systems and systems-based processes and practices from the perspective of business. It also looks at how systems-based understanding was incorporated into books and research that was adopted by some businesses. The chapter describes the historical overview of systems and business to be more aligned with the needs and insights of a business executive and not as a comprehensive academic look at the journey. It discusses the foundational ideas and processes that were not specifically identify as "systems" but relied on or leveraged the interdependence between various components and functions within an organization. Numerous centers and institutes have been established to research, document, and share their insights on systems and business with an ever-growing number of individuals and organizations that are looking for a "better way" to practice business.
