ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines a process to ensure that the impacted households verify their ownership and interest in assets early in the project cycle so that the sign-off process at the end runs smoothly with limited grievances. The cut-off date which set an entitlement to compensation and resettlement must be robust, follow national laws and must be individually communicated to impacted households. The company must have a legal process which will enable land access to continue and compensation funds to be put in escrow until the dispute resolution process has been completed. The cash compensation sign-off should include both payments for assets and also any additional allowances, such as for transport, which will be paid for by the project. While the sign-off process is at the end of the project, the planning should begin much earlier as there is always a risk that some households will reject compensation and resettlement, potentially delaying the project.
