ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the conversation about whether foreign direct investment in China promotes a sort of "race to the bottom" or if it can elevate environmental and labour standards. It presents case studies of nine large companies operating in China, focusing on sustainability-oriented innovations in their supply chains and aims to inspire and inform action. The book gives practising managers and students valuable insight into the wider research context. It suggests that managers should improve the environmental and social performance of their companies. The book concentrates on what managers can do. It concludes with a brief literature review of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) as it relates to the case studies.
