ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we address the issue of how to measure the progress of our efforts towards a sustainable future. We examine what makes an appropriate indicator, what we should measure in order to assess progress (or lack of it), and the particular challenges of measuring a sustainable transition. With environmental, economic and social aspects to be evaluated, is there really any objective approach? We then examine whether a single indicator is realistic, and if not, what combination of indicators should be used.
