ABSTRACT

Israelis, who long ago gave up hope of finding information on Swiss bank accounts surfaced, as did claimants to the Koh-i-noor diamond in Punjab, India. For the Swiss banks, the revelation that they were found to have been concealing, willingly or otherwise, the dormant account of the mother of the American Ambassador, the country from which the heaviest criticism had come, would become the supreme embarassment. Since 1995, the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA) maintained that in their searches through their records they had found only 774 dormant accounts. It was only reasonable then that they should publish these accounts for claimants around the world to see. The SBA published the names of over 10,000 Swiss-owned dormant accounts and 3,687 foreign-owned dormant accounts. The Swiss owned accounts were valued at close to $7,000,000 and the foreign-owned accounts were valued at close to $4,100,000.
