ABSTRACT
In Aldous Huxley's novel "Ape and Essence," an expedition from New Zealand comes to California in order to study what remains of nature and civilization a century and a half after the destruction of the North American continent by a nuclear war. The researchers experience a culture that understands itself as the rule of Belial, as the rule of evil.
