ABSTRACT

Heumann Alice and Joseph Maier became closely associated with Frank Tannenbaum and the University Seminars at Columbia University. They were influential in Frank Tannenbaum’s intellectual circle and participated actively in the University Seminar Movement. The Seminar welcomed many important Latin Americans as guests, participants, and speakers. Maier participated in a number of University Seminars, reflecting his many diverse interests. These included Seminars on Religion, Cultural Pluralism, Eighteenth-Century European Culture, and Latin America. The ‘seminar’ technique was a way favored by Tannenbaum in looking at a problem. Maier’s seminar on “Content and Method” is a notable example of the effectiveness of the Tannenbaum model. Under Maier’s guidance, many leading scholars presented papers to the Seminar on “Content and Methods in the Social Sciences.” Maier’s early contact with the Frankfurt School when serving as research assistant at the Institute of Social Research has also left its mark on his later interests and activities.
