ABSTRACT

A useful device for working out Existential Perspective (EP) dimensions is to employ a theatrical metaphor: the EP is the stage-setting for the performance embodied in the ethical processes. The scenic space of its EP is this world of men; its time is the period of worldly life. Its dramatis personae are individuals treated as units, not communities or nations. Overtly scientific EP's may be extracted from ethical theories that have actually been propounded and also by looking to the specific sciences to see what the offerings are for ethical theory. Psychological EP's have been perhaps most common in modern ethical theories. Many ethical theories that present no systematic picture of the existential assumptions are prone to rely on an interpersonal or general sociocultural account of the context in which ethical problems arise. Western religions exhibit considerable differences in the picture of God's properties, man's derivation from God, God's intentions for man.
