ABSTRACT

Weights are carried balanced upon the head. When carrying heavy loads, the load is balanced in or on a carrying pack of twisted papyrus pulp which is set upon the head. Sticks have replaced the spears, which used to be made with a pointed iron-shod tip to the haft, for use as walking sticks; to what extent the practice of carrying the sticks is a mere habit surviving from the days when spears were genuinely needed. There are precise habits for husking corn and removing the kernels. The latter is done by rubbing two ears together and then scooping out the kernels with the fingers. Adzing as done by the carpenter is the same sort of process as ordinary carving, but with more specialized tools. There are three sorts of adzes, one with a plain straight edge, one curved, and the third a loop.
