ABSTRACT

Most of the authoritarians with whom one might come into contact in a liberal society are half-hearted. Their authoritarianism is tempered and moderated by various principles that are really liberal. One place to begin explaining this would be to compare the liberal and authoritarian lists of admirable traits. The liberal alternative is hardly worth considering unless it can breathe the rare air and do battle in the same high places. There is more to say about liberal education, but most of it is brought out more fully in the following discussion of educational neutralism. The other is that liberal educators do everything they can to encourage the young to reject irrational prejudgment, in favor of disciplined and thoughtful after-judgment. The liberal educator presupposes that whatever concern might deserve to be called ultimate is of such a nature that it cannot be truly served except by choice.
