ABSTRACT
What we make of the virtue of tolerance is the acid test of whether the liberal political tradition can be rescued from its foundations crisis. But the test is not really acid until tolerance is thrown into the strongest of all caustics. That caustic is religion. This is where the ultimate concern is roused, and where all that it cannot suffer must suffer deliquescence.
