ABSTRACT
The only influence of power which challenges the employer's autocracy and dictatorship is the American labor movement of our country, and all other democratic industrial countries. The menace of capitalism in America has been fully recognized outside of labor's ranks. Herbert Hoover has spoken of the need for remedying the social and economic ills that arise from "the aggregation of great wealth with the power for economic domination" and of the importance of avoiding capitalism as well as Socialism. American labor aims to check the development of capitalism and to further the development of industrial democracy. The pronouncement of last year's convention, pointing out that industrial democracy must evolve mainly through industry itself and not through government, presupposed the co-operation at least of the bulk of organized employers. Industrial democracy must be as clearly defined by what it moves away from as by what it moves toward.
