ABSTRACT

Thomas Woodrow Wilson was in the act of accomplishing the impossible, he was the greatest man in the world, he was killing men, he was the Saviour of the World and he still had his wife and House to love. Wilson had begun in 1916 to hate Lodge with an intense neurotic hatred, refused Lodge's offer of cooperation. He was prepared to reveal to Wilson some at least of the secret treaties of the Allies, assuming naturally that Wilson would insist on defining the precise aims for which he must ask the people of the United States to pour out a flood of blood and wealth. House also inserted in Wilson's mind the picture of a Peace Conference at which England would loyally cooperate with the United States in establishing a just and lasting peace. Both the President and House seem to have misunderstood totally the sort of respect that the governments of Europe had for Wilson.
