ABSTRACT

Through the day and night of April 4, 1919, Woodrow Wilson tossed in his bed unable to choose between the alternatives which were equally horrible to him. But he had to choose. He could not run off to Rydal to recover with a dear friend beside him and Wansfell "like some great nourishing breast" before him. On April 5, 1919, Wilson was still bedridden. Clemenceau, Lloyd George and Orlando met in Wilson's study, and Colonel House ran back and forth through the door in the book case which separated Wilson's bedroom from his study to keep him informed as to the progress of their negotiations. Reparations were under discussion. Just before Wilson's breakdown, Admiral Grayson, his physician and friend, had sent a cable to Tumulty saying, "Am still confident President will win.
