ABSTRACT
Even the original wild landscape was not covered everywhere by climatic climax vegetation (Chapter II). Some of the vegetation which was swept away by the successive waves of Neolithic, Bronze Age, Anglo-Saxon and mediaeval farmers, consisted of priseral and sub-climax communities. Even today, some small areas of these remain almost unaltered but, in great part, like the climatic climax, they have been removed or modified.
