ABSTRACT

One way of conceptualizing the study is to say it is the search for a line, for some border between Ins and Outs that is not shown in one’s immediate perception of them. Such a line was found in the beliefs of Ins and Outs about points of Catholic doctrine, though the line was clearer for one kind of belief than for another. This chapter describes the things these people value, and the things they say are important to them. Ins and Outs might both value changing one’s outlook on life; Outs might see membership in the Catholic Church as blocking the attainment of that goal, whereas Ins might see membership as aiding it. Both Ins and Outs might value open-mindedness, the Outs thinking that being open-minded was impossible in the Church and the Ins thinking the opposite.
