ABSTRACT

In 1929 Mr. Barton invested $1,000 in bonds, using $600 from his savings account and $400 inherited from an uncle's estate. Mrs. Barton says she is able and willing to work. Mr. Barton completed grammar school. Mrs. Barton completed three years of high school. After his graduation from grammar school, Mr. Barton went to work but this early work history is not given. The Bartons were "very well off" from the time of their marriage in 1922 until about 1930. Both Mr. and Mrs. Barton like to read and they use their library cards a great deal. Mrs. Barton said that she feels only gratitude toward Home Relief. Mr. Barton, although wearing a sport shirt, was neatly dressed. Mr. Barton says that he started work when he graduated from public school because when he was young that was the usual thing to do; only rich children went to high school.
