ABSTRACT

Mr. Berger said that he had little education in Poland because when he was of school age few poor children, and certainly few Jews attended school. Mr. Berger's father was a butcher in a small town in Poland and was able to do little for his children. When Mr. Berger arrived in New York City he had no intention of taking up the trade he had learned and practiced in Europe. Mr. Berger worked for the friend as a clothing salesman. In 1925 Mr. Berger opened a shoe and clothing store and ran this business for a period of two years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Berger said with real feeling that they had loved Charleston—that it was a beautiful city and that the life there was good because it was so quiet. Mr. Berger likes the United States very much and says that things are much better here than in Europe.
