ABSTRACT

Mr. Caldwell is unemployed because of a 1935 strike at the large baking company at which he is employed. Mr. Caldwell is a member of the Bakery and Confectionary Workers' Union. Mrs. Caldwell's mother is seriously ill with "some sort of nervous disorder. Mrs. Caldwell is short, stockily built, with gray-brown hair. The Caldwells are members of the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Caldwell was formerly a member of the Scotch Presbyterian Church in Scotland and Mr. Caldwell of the Presbyterian Church in North Ireland. Mr. Caldwell is more than six feet tall, slender, and of youthful appearance. Mr. Caldwell comes from the North of Ireland where his father had a prosperous farm. Mr. Caldwell had a short and simple experience with Home Relief. One of the most important episodes in Mr. Caldwell's life was the death of his eldest son, in the early twenties; he ascribes this to neglect by the doctor who failed to diagnose the illness as pneumonia.
