ABSTRACT

The Decalogue prohibits two separate offenses, one against God and one against man,1 that relate to truthfulness. The first, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain,”2 is an offense against God and applies both in and out of the courtroom. The second, “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor,”3 is pecu liar to the judicial setting and is an offense not only against God, but also against man.
