ABSTRACT
Henry Roth is the author of one book, Call It Sleep, which was published in December 1934, received a number of very good notices from responsible readers and was promptly lost in the shuffle of new books. Henry Roth was born on February 8, 1906, attended De Witt Clinton High School in New York and was graduated from the College of the City of New York in 1928. In 1938, he went to Yaddo, where he met his wife; they lived for a while in New York. In 1945, he quit New York and got a job as a grinder in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he stayed for about a year. A jaundiced eye might well conclude that Scott Fitzgerald's prejudiced prediction of a novel that was bound to come of "the Jewish tenement block, festooned with wreaths out of Ulysses and the later Gertrude Stein" comes closer to the truth as an evaluation of Roth's work.
