ABSTRACT

Success and fame at last: I’m invited to speak at the annual meeting of “my” professional association—the Modern Language Association, membership ca. 28,000—on the subject of English Teaching, How to Improve. Do I know, without being told, what is wanted for this talk? I do indeed. Something about Relevance, assuredly. Something about Involving the Kids and Using the Media. A sample turned-on test question perhaps? (Joseph Andrew was the first Beatle. Discuss.) —My feeble mockery is of course insincere: I’m pleased and flattered to have been invited. I accept.
