ABSTRACT

John Randolph of Roanoke, Virginia (7 773-1833) was so ardent a Jeffer­ sonian that he turned on Jefferson himself when he became convinced that, as President, his leader had subverted their common principles. Randolph, an emotional thinker, mixed libertarian with states-rights ideas. He de­ fended slavery, but provided for his slaves. <(John Randolph's Negroes” were often noted in the course of the anti-slavery debate.
