ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to present a largely communitarian view of planning. I do so in the first part of this essay in a similar way that John Udy (1980) presented the eternal Western values of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, to which he added Love as the justification or the “why” of planning. After setting out the proposed core values for planning, I focus on the intrinsic value of community and briefly review the role the concept has played in planning and the recent development

of a communitarian ethical perspective in philosophy, sociology, and economics. In conclusion, I turn back to the jewels and indicate the communitarian aspects of my approach.
