ABSTRACT

John Olm sted reached Southside by June 9 or 10, 1854. Restored to his wife and child and the old farmhouse he had grown to love, he took over the supervision of the farm. He found himself critical of the state of the place. While Fred traveled about criticizing Southern farming, his own farm deteriorated. The pear trees needed pruning and there were suckers growing from the base of every trunk. Fred's brother rather grimly prom ised himself to try to remedy the disrepair.
