The letter continues, “Our grand army is very nearly destroyed. I wonder whether they will let you know it___The majority of our men have lost tents, knapsack and blanket, have saved only musket and cartridge box. Many in the line of battle are bareheaded and barefooted. Think what their condition will be in this shadeless plain when the July sun comes out
tomorrow. I am going to get if possible, first tents, or something that will cast a shade for the wounded.”
