ABSTRACT

On that little-known planet, the “ real world,” the members of a working group seldom remain solely involved in the internal life of their unit. They become sensitive as well to the actions of persons or organizations in their group’s environment, develop feelings of responsibility for nonmembers, or recognize that the group is accountable to particular others. As a result, when they choose an aspiration for their group, their decision may reflect the influence of these external sources, ln order to make this abstract assertion more concrete, let us consider several instances of such an influence.
