ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a synthesis of the interviews and the focus group discussions. To ensure a diverse representation of tribal communities, 50 reservation communities were selected for participation in the focus groups or telephone interviews. Focus group meetings were organized regionally in order to facilitate attendance by tribal housing and economic development directors from each region. The demographic, housing, and economic characteristics of the tribal communities represented varied widely. The focus groups and telephone interviews highlighted four factors that were critical for housing and economic development. In short, tribal governance with respect to housing and economic development bears on housing and economic conditions in Indian country. Focus group meetings were organized regionally in order to facilitate attendance by tribal housing and economic development directors from each region. The promotion and expansion of a small-business sector was one strategy that participants felt could provide economic opportunities for community members.
