ABSTRACT

The method of analysis used has grown primarily out of the work of M. Kolinski, and R. A. Waterman. It is directed toward obtaining as objective a picture of music structure as possible, and subjective judgments are eliminated in most cases. In the modal structures, a fermata over a tone indicates that it is the final tone of the song, while a reversed fermata indicates the beginning tone. The asterisk designates the subjective tonic, while the whole note indicates the duration tone. The sign indicates important intervals used in the song; the arrows show the direction of movement of these melodic intervals. Non-shamanistic personal songs are scattered in the sense that an individual receives a single song or songs which relate to a noncuring activity. Diagnostic characteristics of the Sweathouse songs include the following: terrace and undulating movement; interval distribution; falling release; melodic-rhythmic accent; final flattening; and an identifying melodic-rhythmic feature at the ends of phrases.
