ABSTRACT
On that first visit he paid to Manchester in November 1838, Charles Dickens was invited to dinner by Gilbert Winter, a Manchester solicitor. Among the other guests were two local manufacturers, the brothers William and Daniel Grant. Dickens was evidently so impressed by the pair that shortly thereafter they made their appearance as the Cheeryble brothers in Nicholas Nickleby, which had begun publication in April of that year. 1
