ABSTRACT

Every true social force is the product of a cooperation, on a larger or smaller scale, concentrated in some individual organ. The social organism, therefore, is a single whole just as, and even more than, the individual organism, in which political theorists know how much material functions, in spite of their governing the rest, have constant need of the cerebral functions. The positive scale of human progress is thus complete, and public opinion tends to correct the order of importance originally given to the several natural elements of social power. And the positive theory of human nature prepares political theorists for this work, for it places the center of cerebral unity in the affections. The positive religion at length makes material activity the essential condition of unity, whether in the individual or in the race. The positive religion, however, introduces sounder habits of thought and of feeling, by insisting on the real facts of daily life.
