ABSTRACT
IN 1949, the American Committee for Cultural Freedom, and in 1950, the Congress for Cultural Freedom (in Europe), were founded. Both organizations have haunted Communists and anti-Communists, and the latter has been revealed to have had CIA connections. I was a member of the American Committee from the beginning, later became a member of the executive board, but had nothing to do organizationally with the Congress, though as one of its critics I was engaged in some controversies with it.
