ABSTRACT

i found the university of illinois campus very appealing when I first saw it as an entering engineering freshman on the 1942 Labor Day weekend. Straddling the border between the Twin Cities of Champaign and Urbana, the campus was laid out as a central broadwalk shaded by a canopy of huge elms, lined on either side by a single row of architecturally hodgepodge classroom and laboratory buildings. The elegantly furnished, colonial style Student Union cut across the northern end of the broadwalk and the circular, Pantheonesque auditorium, fronted by a statue of Alma Mater stretching out her arms to embrace her returning children, across its southern end.
