ABSTRACT
by the fall of 1949, there were six research fellows working in Max’s lab—Élie Wollman, Jean Weigle, Wolf Weidel, Renato Dulbecco, Seymour Benzer, and me—a whopping growth since I showed up as Max’s first Caltech postdoc the year before. We formed a close-knit sib, with Max as our spiritus rector.
