ABSTRACT

i had finagled my triumphant return to Berlin in November 1946 by responding to a news item I ran across in a spring 1946 issue of Chemical and Engineering News. A Mr. Charles Collins of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Branch (TUB) of the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington was reported to be looking for qualified people to screen technical documents in occupied Germany. I was electrified, thrilled, stunned: Jeepers, Creepers! Here’s the ticket to Germany that will make my I’m-back-in-Berlin dream come true!

Dear Mr. Collins,

I want to apply for one of the technical document screener positions in Occupied Germany, which, according to a recent article in Chemical and Engineering News, you are seeking to fill. I am a graduate student in physical chemistry at the University of Illinois, carrying out research on synthetic rubber under the sponsorship of the War Production Board. I speak fluent German, and have extensive experience in translating scientific and technical German.
