Sectional strife provides the context for most of Calhoun s historical image, though it should be remembered that the slavery controversy did not become a predominant issue for Calhoun or for American politics until the Wilmot Proviso was brought forward in 1846. Sectional conflict was at first economic, as the first two readings show.
