ABSTRACT
Because it forms such an important and little known part of his career, two of Calhoun s major speeches on banking and currency have been included. The knot of issues around the currency and banking system were central to all of the political conflicts of the Jacksonian era, but American historians have done an abysmal job of explaining them, contenting themselves primarily with passing around old political polemics which explain very little.
