ABSTRACT

The mind turns far away from actuality into the dark past of mythology. In group movements, as for example, the female suffragette movement, narcissism is shifted from individual to group. The aggressiveness is then in the service of a social ideology and often very legitimate demands. The mild, easy-going French proletarian women developed orgies of aggressiveness during the French revolution. For this chapter, the author have selected from their life history and great achievements only those events sufficient for understanding their personalities in the light of psychoanalysis. Until then she was a devoted, highly intellectual girl with an immense capacity for sublimation-with interests in mathematics, the study of nature and last, but not least, social economics to which she later made great theoretical contributions. Her aggressiveness which was a very strong trait of her personality was from the beginning in the service of a political cause.
