ABSTRACT

Sigmund Freud was one of the world’s great letter writers; his capacities as an artist can be highlighted as one follows how he could perform off the top of his head. Carl G. Jung first wrote to Freud in 1906, and although Jung was less dedicated to the art of letter writing than Freud, their correspondence remained intense until the falling out in 1913. Whereas to Jung the correspondence between himself and Freud was not so crucial, to Freud it meant that as long as letters went back and forth the relationship was under his control as a writer. Freud was encouraging and supportive of his new Swiss student, and even though in later years Jung might sometimes prefer to trace his indebtedness to Eugen Bleuler, the Swiss expert on schizophrenia, there can be little doubt of Jung’s extended discipleship to Freud.
