ABSTRACT
I believe that consciously purposeful action involves a kind of mental activity-reflective consciousness-which is itself dependent on unconscious mental activities of much earlier evolutionary origin. I conceive of these two (or more) systems as in interaction, which can be pictured as a dialogue; and that each can distort the other. I agree that the undue concentration of Western culture on purposeful activities disturbs the balance of this dialogue.
