ABSTRACT

The individualistic motivation behind the Fourierist Associations was presented as a manifestation of the theory of "attractive work." The Sylvania Association was the first phalanx to be established in May 1843 on a hilly region in northeastern Pennsylvania. One Mentian Community was established in a forest area in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, in 1843 by a group of 40 workers and mechanics, some of whom were influenced by the Owenist doctrine. Another settlement, the Social Reform Unity, was established by workers and mechanics from Brooklyn who had been supporters of the Fourierist movement from its beginning. Clarkson Phalanx was the first and most important of the confederations of phalanxes around Rochester. The Sodus Bay Phalanx was the second to be established in April 1844 on a Shaker commune that was dissolved a few years earlier. In addition to the local social ferment, Ohio was influenced by Fourierist organization in the neighboring states.
