ABSTRACT
Within a relatively primitive economy there is little opportunity for a specialized professional middleman to make a living as an employment agent. The public marketplace acts as an extremely effective device for bringing together prospective employers and seekers of work. Its location is readily known and accessible to all. Other goods are sold there—why not labor? The buyer and the seller have only to meet one another, make their interests known and agree on terms.
