ABSTRACT

The biggest exotic island in and around Ilosho is undoubtedly the University “compound.” The economic importance of the University as an employer is further enhanced by the fact that University of Ilosho (U.I.). employs a relatively high number of highly paid personnel. Fragile though the integration of Nigerian society is, what there is of it is largely in the top echelons of the occupational hierarchy, and the role of U.I. as a “national” university has been paramount in their respect. The University, as the main source for the country’s bureaucratic mandarinate, molds not only the minds of its students, but also their entire life style. The most crucial part of the budget exercise concerns the delicate negotiations between U.I., the National Universities Commission and the relevant ministries. The links between the University and the Western State are mostly political and social rather than economic.
