ABSTRACT

The Intermediate Staff are typically highly capable people whom economic circumstances more than anything else have precluded from gaining a university education. The administrative office concerned with the personnel side of the Intermediate and Subordinate Staff is the Establishment and Labour Office of the Registry, while the running of Obatala falls within the tasks of the Estate Office, also within the Registry. Though superior in physical terms to much of Ilosho, Obatala Village nevertheless remains a lower-class ghetto within the University community. Domestic servants fall somewhere in-between in terms of stability; they are on the whole less stable than the University Junior Staff, but less transient than the “fluid fringe”. Far and away the most important representative organ of the Junior Staff is the University of Ilosho Workers Union. Besides class, the Union is also split along ideological lines of right and left, each wing wanting to affiliate with a different world labor organization.
