ABSTRACT
Dynamic forces within capitalist society assure that change will take place, changes that will benefit mainly the owners, managers, and servants of capitalism. The capitalist system responds to its own contradictions by formulating liberal reforms. These reforms never go beyond the interests of the capitalist system itself; they merely update the existing institutions in order to assure the survival of the system. Reform is the adaptive mechanism of advanced capitalism. Continual reform of the criminal justice system lias been necessary in this century as new contradictions have arisen in advanced capitalism. The correctional reform movement of corporate liberalism, which had been developing for half a century, reached its finest hour in the recommendations of the President's Crime Commission. A socialist society will allow for the fulfilment of certain human values. A critique of legal order and crime control helps us to demystify those fundamental aspects of counterrevolution.
